The Caravaners
Originally published 1909. Brown embossed binding, stain lower front board, otherwise very bright. Green djkt has been lovingly repaired (see photo). 331pp The authoress's prose potrays the "snobbery" of the "Upper Class" but the elegance has to be admired. A humorous story first published in 1909, and featuring an ill-assorted group of upper-class people grappling with the hardships of the open road in the south of England. To a German major and his wife, England presents more than just a contrast of scenery. In 1910 it was still thought possible for respectable persons in England to spend some part of a summer caravaning through the quaint villages and countryside in horse drawn wagons, pulling the horse and wagon up to a stream at night for refreshing sleep. Von Arnim was an inveterate traveler and writer of all things human and interesting, with humor and insight. (Note): adhesive label on spine "Including Extra. 3/6 net; War Costs". (ww11)
